Frenship Tiger football’s motto is Semper Impetus, a Latin term meaning always attack. It’s not hard to see that the Tigers’ offensive attack has been doing just that, they’ve put 119 points on the board over the past two weeks and are averaging 47 points a game through their first four games of the season. There are many coaches contributing to the Tigers’ offense in 2019, but Offensive Coordinator Caleb Holt certainly deserves a lion’s share of credit for what is becoming prolific offensive production.
Last week it was not only Frenship fans and South Plains media who took note of Frenship’s impressive offensive production, but also the biggest name in Texas high school football, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football. The DCTF staff nominate assistant coaches from across the state each week for the DairyMAX Assistant Coach of the Week award, which then goes to a Twitter poll to determine the winner. Weekly winners have the opportunity at the end of the year to receive the Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
The Tigers’ 61-53 victory over Lubbock-Cooper in four overtimes, which included flawless offensive production at the most pivotal moments, spurred Coach Holt’s nomination for this statewide award. From the gutsy play call of a “Philly Special” wide receiver reverse pass back to the quarterback for a game-tying two-point conversion to a pass to a defensive end lined up at tight end to set up another important field goal in overtime, there were certainly many jaw-dropping moments.
Holt was nominated Monday by DCTF and after Twitter polling ended he was announced as the winner on the DCTF Texas Football Today internet show last Friday.
“The Frenship Tiger Football team is responsible for shining a light on what we are trying to accomplish here, and I am so grateful for them,” said Holt. “I work for, and have worked with, so many great coaches that are way better than me, so I am very humbled. I work with a ton of coaches right now that all deserve this award.”
After winning this award, Coach Holt and his Tiger offense went on to score their first 21 points in 2:37 against El Paso Andress in Roswell, NM. Ultimately, the Tigers won 58-3 with more than 400 yards and 4 touchdowns passing for Donovan Smith, more than 200 yards receiving and 2 touchdowns for Drew Hocutt, and William Bayouth chipping in 79 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground. It would seem the attack is finding its stride with the bulk of the season still ahead, and the statewide media is taking notice.
