After a weekend of fierce competition at the UIL Spirit State Championship, the Frenship High School Cheerleaders came up just a few points short of making finals.
The squad competed against 70 6A Division One teams that are broken down by school enrollment. Division one schools have a student enrollment of 2,750 students or more, putting Frenship High School right at the cutoff for the largest group of competitors.
Freshmen, Junior Varsity and Varsity cheerleaders competed in every category - Fight Song, Crowd Leading Cheer and Band Chant. Varsity Coach, Kayci Smith, said the athletes left everything they had on the mat.
"We are so proud of how they performed, as well as how they represented Frenship High School and Frenship ISD," Smith said. "We appreciate the support the entire District showed us and are grateful for the opportunity to compete in the sport we love while representing Frenship."
In 2017, the FHS Cheerleaders made their first appearance at the state championship and finished 25th overall in the state of Texas. In 2018, the athletes made it into finals and placed 4th in the state of Texas, only missing 1st place by less than a tenth of a point. In their third appearance at state, they made it into the to 20 state finalists and placed 14th in the state of Texas.
"Each year we have moved up in divisions, which brigs some tougher competition," said Smith, "but we practice, plan and prepare all year long and are always ready for the competition."
Congratulations, Frenship Cheer! We are proud of each of these student-athletes.
