In the game against the Bulldogs, the Tigers dug a deep hole in the first quarter, falling 20-6 at the buzzer. The team ended the 2nd quarter with a 24 point deficit. The Tigers fought in the 3rd and 4th quarters to gain traction but ended up with the loss to Plainview, 62-43.
The Tigers gained back their confidence and momentum on Tuesday during their first District game against the San Angelo Central Bobcats.
In the first quarter, the Tigers started off strong, holding the Bobcats back, 9-3. The offense stayed strong in the second quarter, ending the half 19-13 with the Tigers on top.
The Bobcats came back strong after the half, putting themselves ahead at the start of the fourth quarter 25-24.
The Tigers rose to the challenge in the fourth quarter, forcing the Bobcats into 16 turnovers and only 5 offensive rebounds. Frenship had their best scoring quarter in the fourth, taking the overall win 38-30, winning their 21st straight home District victory.
Tiger Girls Head Basketball Coach, Cary Hilliard, said the theme for the year is “ThriVe.” He said the V stands for the roman numeral representing the number 5. He said it is his teams goal to claim the 5th straight District Championship.
“I love how our team is battling this year,” Hilliard said. “After losing four seniors, that all are playing college basketball, we weren’t sure how we would be this year. So far, this group has exceeded my expectations. To be 9-4 and battling all the things that COVID has brought this year is a remarkable feat. We are just now beginning to get our full team on the court. With UIL extending volleyball season, it created more overlap than it usually does.”
Hilliard said he was excited to honor his Senior athletes on Tuesday.
“Airron Gaydon is a 4 year letterwinner and our leading scorer this year, Riley Roberts is also a 4 year letter winner and already holds the records for charges taken in a game, season, and career for Frenship basketball,” Hilliard said. “Hannah Page is a 2 year letter winner and brings fire and intelligence off the bench. She has only been in basketball a few weeks because she was an all-district player and 3 year starter in volleyball. Desiree Jefferson is one of our more versatile players - she plays both a guard and a post for us because of her toughness. Lataviah Miller is a move in from California that just joined us in November. She has already established herself as a starter and is really getting a feel for our system and growing each game.”
The Tiger girls team will take on Odessa Permian at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, December 18.
