Frenship Varsity Girls Basketball Team Prepares for Next Round of District Play

On January 8, the Tigers hosted the Odessa High Lady Broncos at home. The Tigers made 10 three-point shots for a 42% shooting average and shot 49% overall for the game. The team created an impressive 24 turnovers while scoring a season high of 81 points. Four players scored in the double-figures with Lataviah Miller with 15 points, Airron Gaydon with 13 points, Addison McClure with 13 points, and Abbi Holder with 11 points. Additionally, Airron Gaydon and Hannah Page each recorded five assists.

On January 12, the Tigers traveled to Midland High to take on the Lady Bulldogs. Despite being behind from the beginning of the game, the Tigers never gave up and at the end of the fourth quarter, Airron Gaydon, assisted by Elena Noyola, sank a three-point shot at the buzzer to tie the game and force overtime. The Tigers outscored the Bulldogs 8-5 in overtime to take home the win, 56-53. Addison McClure led the team with 17 points, a matched career high. Abbi Holder had her career high in scoring with 16 points.

Girls basketball head coach Trent Hilliard said his team is still a work in progress and has been improving week-to-week.

“We have to be more consistent,” Hilliard said. “Turnovers are our biggest liability right now, so if we can learn to take care of the ball, then we can play with anybody in the state. We are a still a fairly young team and games like the one against Midland only help to make us better.”

Hilliard said that many of his athletes have been recording record numbers as of late.

“Hannah Page had a career high five assists against Odessa High,” Hilliard said. “Elena Noyola continues to provide solid play at the point guard position Riley Roberts drew two more charges, adding to her Frenship career record of 41 charges drawn. Zaria Fowler was big for us down the stretch against Midland, scoring all of her points in the 4th quarter and overtime.”

Hilliard said that his team will start the second round of district play on Tuesday when they face off against Odessa Permian at home. He said this Friday’s game against San Angelo Central has been postponed until January 28.
