Frenship Boys and Girls Golf Swings to the Top of Weekend Tournaments

The boys team took second place at the Squaw Creek Golf Invitational in Glen Rose. As a team they shot 293-292, which is a team score of 8 over pare for the entire weekend. Senior Logan Vargas (71-73) and Junior Leyton Hiebert (72-72) finished in the top five with an even par score of 144.

The boys will compete next in the 6A Region I Golf Preview at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie this weekend.

The girls team took 6th place at the Tall City Classic tournament in Midland. They girls played two courses: Ranchland Hills on Friday and Hogan Park on Saturday.

Frenship Girls Golf coach Roger Whipkey said that Friday’s portion of the tournament was a great learning experience for the team.

Frenship Tiger Paw“We struggled at little bit early on at Ranchland Hills but started playing much better as the day went on,” Whipkey said. “It is the site of our District Tournament and it’s a tough course, so the most important thing was to get a good look and feel of the course and I feel like we did that.”

Whipkey said the girls played the second day at Hogan Park and that they played better than the day before.

“I really like the way we bounced back from the day before,” Whipkey said. “I was proud of the girls for putting the past behind them and focusing on the present. Although we didn’t have anybody finish in the top three, I was really encouraged by our effort, especially the last day.”

Whipkey said he is excited to see what his team can do as they continue to improve.

“We are getting better every day, and at every tournament we are beginning to peak,” Whipkey said. “This is the right time since the District Tournament is less than three weeks away.

The girls will also play again this weekend in the 6A Region I Golf Preview at Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
