What you might not know is that Coach Reynolds was once a Frenship Tiger baseball player himself. Shortly after the Frenship baseball program started in 1987, Reynolds carried the team all the way to the State Championship game in 1993.
“I was fortunate enough to be a part of some really good teams,” Reynolds said. “We won the District championship all four years I was there.”
After graduating from Frenship, Reynolds went on to play baseball at Texas Tech University. While at TTU he helped his team win a couple Big 12 Championships, and at one time while he was on the team, they were ranked #1 in the nation.
This year marks Reynold’s 19th year at Frenship and 14th year as the head baseball coach. He said that when he learned about the 300th win, he was surprised because he hadn’t been counting.
“I know my name may be tied to those 300 wins but there are a whole lot of good players who made those wins happen, as well as a whole coaching staff, that are just as much tied to those wins as me,” Reynolds said. “The other part of that is the support we have from our administration and fans. We are given the great resources to be successful.”
Reynolds said his team was excited to learn about the achievement, but he reminded them that what he is trying to teach them is not just about winning.
“I appreciate the recognition of our staff having 300 wins since we took over, but we really don’t think much about that,” Reynolds said. “Our main goal as a program is to help turn young men into successful and productive people when they leave here. We just get to do that through the platform of baseball.”
During the Rock Hardball Tournament Reynolds and his team won 2 games and lost 3.
“We got to see a lot of things that we need to get better at,” Reynolds said. “We didn’t win as many games as we would have liked, but we know what we need to do to get better.”
Reynolds said that he likes to put his team in tough situations early on in the season.
“These three first weekend tournaments are some of the best teams in Texas and we always realize when we are done with tournament season what we have to do to compete at the highest level,” Reynolds said. “We know we can’t control everything that happens on a baseball field but if we will be good at what we can control, we will be happy.”
Reynolds said that some of the stand out tournament players were hitters, Coldon Kiser (571 AVG, 8 hits, 10 RBI), Jake Sherrard (417 AVG, 5 hit, 1 double, 4 runs) and Evan Johnson (364 AVG, 1 double, 6 runs), and pitchers Haydden Kennard (6 IP, 4 hits, 2 BB, 5 K) and Ryland Morin (5 IP, 4 hits, 0 BB, 3 K).
The Tigers are competing again this weekend in the DFW Clash Tournament in Flower Mound.
