The Odessa Lady Bronchos fought to stay in the game after scoring on a breakaway to bring the deficit to 2-1, however, Frenship’s Mia Chambliss scored again for the Tigers less than five minutes later. The final goal came from Makayla Varela with only three minutes left in the match.
The girls will take on Midland High in their final District 2-6A match on Senior Night next Tuesday, March 16 at home. They will need to win or draw to secure their spot in the playoffs.
The boys took the narrow victory against Odessa High with a final score of 2-1 to claim their spot in the class 6A playoffs.
The Tigers and Bronchos fought through the first half but the first points of the game went to Odessa. After the half, Frenship’s Jon Olivarez scored back to back goals, first on a counterattack and second on a 25-yard kick. The defense tightened the reigns and prevented Odessa from scoring for the rest of the game.
The Tigers will face Midland High at home in their District 2-6A season finale on Senior Night, Tuesday, March 16.
Frenship Boys Soccer Head Coach Scott Smith said in the final game third place in the District is guaranteed, but second place will be determined with a win.
“I’m wanting senior night to be more about our seniors and playing their last game here at school - we’ve had to work harder to ensure playoffs because of the slow start,” Smith said. “I think we can go into this last game without talking about playoffs and that will be our mindset.”
Smith said he is hoping his seniors take it all in during their final match at home, “I want them to enjoy their last night under the lights at FHS.”
Spectators are able to purchase tickets to the final District match here beginning Monday, March 15 at 12:00 p.m.
