Girls Varsity Golf
At the Red Raider Invitational, Varsity Girls Golfer Yamila Kuchta led the way with a score of 83. The next day at the Shadow Hills competition, the Varsity team shot for 342 and improved 37 shots from the day before. The total score for the Tigers was 721, placing them fourth overall in the Varsity Division.
Frenship Girls Golf Coach Roger Whipkey said the team is young but shows a lot of promise.
“We have only one Senior, Maci Waggoner, and many talented young players,” Whipkey said. “We replaced three Seniors from last year who were the top three seeded players on the team, including Lainey Cristan who was the District runner-up, Regional qualifier, and is now playing collegiately in New Orleans, so we are going to take our lumps early, but I don't know if I have ever had a more focused and hard-working team. My expectations are sky-high for them to compete for a district championship and return the team to the regional tournament.”
The Tigers will compete again next weekend at the Rockwind Classic on October 1st and 2nd at the Gaines Country Golf Club in Gaines County and the Rockwind Golf Club in Hobbs, NM
Boys Varsity Golf
The Varsity Boys Blue Golf team started off another successful season last weekend at the Bart Granger Memorial Golf tournament in Fort Worth, the largest invitational high school tournament in the United States. Fifty-two schools, and over 250 players, competed in the invitational.
The Tigers placed 13th and had three players finish in the top 50 in individual honors. Sophomore Hunter Welch finished in 24th place, while Seniors Rex Newsom and Leyton Hiebert placed 41st and 46th.
The Varsity Boys Gold Golf team saw their first action of the season at the Lubbock ISD Invitational last weekend. The Tigers finished 10th as a team and Junior Jathan Reed took home the individual championship trophy with scores of 68 and 73, winning his first high school tournament.
