Early on in the game against Midland Legacy last Friday night, the Tigers knew that it would be a challenge. Frenship Volleyball Head Coach Toree Winchell said the game was a good test for her team.
“We did some really good things, especially early in the match,” Winchell said. “The thing that I was most proud of were our adjustments during the game. The girls really took their job and assignments to heart, we just couldn't sting enough together to finish out with the win.”
Winchell said her entire team played great, but she had a senior player that really stood out.
“Maddie Brouillette had 45 digs,” Winchell said. “That is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to her and what she brings to our team. I have said it before, but she is our unsung hero. We wouldn't be in the position that we are without her!”
The Tigers fell to Legacy early on in District play when they played a five set battle (23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 23-25, 13-15).
“Legacy has a lot of talent and depth in multiple positions,” Winchell said. “They have great leadership and a great bond that makes them a really tough team to take down.”
The Tigers weren’t down long though. On Tuesday they faced Midland High for the second time and came out on top after a five set encounter with the Bulldogs.
“It was a very reminiscent feeling last night compared to Friday night's game against Legacy,” Winchell said. “It did feel good to turn that five set feeling into a win this time around. Midland High played really well, and we had to fight for every point.”
The Tigers put in work in the first set, pulling out the victory 25-16. The second and third sets were tough on the Tigers, allowing the Bulldogs to win both 13-25 and 17-25. Before the fourth set, Frenship decided that they wouldn’t go down without a fight.
“Hope Rivera and Hannah Lockett are two of our setters,” Winchell said. “They did a really great job of distributing the ball around to our hitters and putting us in the best position possible on Tuesday night. Hope had 25 assists on the night and Hannah had 21.”
The last two sets sealed the deal for the Tiger win going 25-22 and 15-12.
The Tigers remain in second place in District and are sitting at 7-2.
“While it is exciting [that we are sitting in second place overall], we are working to stay focused on each individual game, knowing that there are no easy games left,” Winchell said. “Everyone is looking for any kind of win, and in our district, any team could surprise you!”
