Terra Vista’s Student Council, National Honor Society, Cheer squad, and Junior PTA came together to raise funds for the South Plains Food Bank’s 39h annual U Can Share Holiday Fund Drive, a community-wide effort to feed those in need across the South Plains. The students held several campus activities and a student vs teacher game and raised $2,005 for their donation.
After hearing the need to help families fight food insecurity, Terra Vista teacher and student council sponsor Jennifer Verett said it was a simple decision for the students to pick this fundraiser.
“I think this embodied everything about the Frenship Way as they were doing all they could to help not only their tigers here at TVMS but the larger community of Lubbock. They learned to look for needs and that even though they are young and students, what they did made a difference,” said Verett.
Last Friday, the students along with the student council sponsors, joined KCBD NewsChannel 11 during their live coverage of the U Can Share Holiday Fund Drive to present the $2,005 check to the South Plains Food Bank. According to the food bank, every $1 helps provide three meals, meaning the students have helped provide over 6,000 meals for families across the South Plains.
“No one should ever have to go without a meal, and our students wanted to help raise money for that purpose,” said Anna Long, Terra Vista Media Specialist and student council sponsor. “Every year, and every fundraiser we do, I am surprised by the generosity and initiative of these students. They step up in a big way and are always willing to help each other out. Sometimes we get so bogged down by negativity, but I just look at these kids, and I am impressed with their enthusiasm for helping one another.”
With one in three children fighting food insecurity in the South Plains, Verett and Long say they are proud to see Terra Vista students helping their fellow peers and community in this way. “It is such an excellent way for students to give back and learn leadership skills. They learned valuable life lessons, and most importantly that anyone can make a difference in the life of someone else,” said Verett.
