The Frenship High School Varsity Boys Golf Team is headed to the state tournament after placing third in the 6A Region 1 tournament earlier this week at the Tangle Ridge Golf Club in Grand Prairie.
Frenship finished the tournament play tied at third place, forcing a playoff with Jesuit, and thanks to Jathan Reed's birdie on the 9th hole starting point, the Tigers came out on top to advance them to the state tournament.
The team, consisting of Rex Newsom, Leyton Hiebert, Jathan Reed, Brayden Katilus, and Hunter Welch, had a combined score of 615.
Three of the Frenship players scored in the top 20 out of 94 players with Rex Newsom and Hunter Welch tied at 13th and Leyton Hiebert tied at 16th place.
The Frenship team will head to Georgetown, Texas to play in the 6A State Tournament on May 9 and 10.
"It’s really rare and that makes it very exciting,” Frenship Boys Golf Head Coach Dan McDonald said about the sudden death round. “We talked to the boys about being gentleman and shaking hands regardless of how the playoff turned out and they did that. But once they got back to their bags, there was a little celebration.”
