Q and U Get Married

Kindergarten students at Oak Ridge Elementary have been working hard throughout the year to learn the letters of the alphabet and the sounds they make. While students were learning about the letter q, students were taught that the letter ‘q’ will always have the letter ‘u’ with it, but that u can stand alone without q.

Bailey Schenk, kindergarten teacher at Oak Ridge, shared that to help students remember the concept, she hosted a ‘qu’ wedding in her classroom. She chose a student to be the bride – Q - and another student to be the groom – U - to walk down the aisle and say their vows.

When describing the vows, the ‘bride and groom’ shared, Schenk said, “their vows included agreeing that the letter u will always accompany the letter q in words such as quick, quilt and quiet and that the letter u would be able to stand alone in other words such as fun, run and sun.”

The other students in the class were able to be guests at the wedding and after the ceremony, everyone was able to enjoy a reception with cookies and juice.

“The students had so much fun and have continued to talk about how q and u are together forever,” said Schenk.
