It’s no argument that Frenship and Lubbock-Cooper have one of the biggest rivalries in Texas. Friday’s game was the fifth straight year of a one-point score break for Frenship and Cooper. The Frenship Tigers persevered and came out on top in overtime.
“It was a battle by both teams to the end. We were fortunate enough to make a play at the end to win the game. My hat goes off to Lubbock-Cooper High School and Coach Darden for playing a good game; those kids played their tails off,” said Head Coach Jay Northcutt. “It’s always a roller coaster of emotions when you play Cooper, and you hope that it turns out in your favor and luckily it did.”
One takeaway for the Tigers from the game is to not overlook the little details.
“We need to continue to work on our little details, the day-in- day-out type of things. One thing that we always emphasize is getting in a good stance. If you can have the discipline to get in the right stance in every play, then you have higher chances of remembering all of the other little things for any given play. We are working on polishing up those details,” said Coach Northcutt.
Frenship High School Senior, Brooks Roberson, who serves as one of the Tigers' wide receivers, agrees that the details make up the bigger picture.
“I definitely think that we can be more physical, run better routes, and polish up the little things,” said Roberson.
Overall, the Tigers are happy to celebrate another win against the Pirates.
“It was a great game; I think that game represents Texas high School football. I’m really proud of how our kids had an x-play mentality. They worked hard for that win,” said Coach Northcutt.
Up next, the Tigers face the Monterey Plainsmen on Thursday, September 7 at 7:00 p.m. at Lowrey Field.
Coach Northcutt has been paying attention to the Plainsmen’s 2-0 start and is anticipating a strong matchup for Thursday.
“They are a dangerous team playing with a lot of confidence. I think it is going to be a good matchup. The main thing that first stands out to me is their size. They have guys that can make some good plays,” said Coach Northcutt.
Frenship High School Senior Santiago Sanchez, who serves as a Safety for the Tigers, hopes to keep the momentum going.
“I believe that it’s important for us to stay true to who we are, keep going at it when it gets hard, and not fall back. We need to keep the energy," said Sanchez.
Don’t miss out on the action this Thursday at Lowrey Field starting at 7:00 p.m.
