Solo and Ensemble is a vocal competition that falls under the UIL umbrella. To compete, students prepare a classical solo and/or ensemble piece to perform. Selections are divided into levels of difficulty. 

All the Frenship students competed with the hardest level of song selection. They perform their selection from memory for a judge. The judge adjudicates their performance using a rubric and assigns a rating based on how well they performed. They start preparing for this experience in October.  

At the recent Regional Solo and Ensemble Choir Competition, 75 Frenship choir students competed against students from across the area for a chance to advance to the state contest. After a long day of competition, 55 Frenship soloists and four ensembles were awarded Division 1 ratings and advanced to state. 

Amy Moss, the Frenship High School Choir Director, stated that this competition is extremely challenging for the students since they need to perform with healthy vocal technique, great intonation, excellent diction, and polished musicality. As an ensemble student must also blend and tune their voice across their ensemble. Additionally, students may be singing arias in other languages such as French, Italian, and German. 

“We are extremely proud of every student that competed,” said Moss. “It is difficult to be brave enough to sing a solo for anyone much less a judge. It takes great courage to put themselves out there!
