Frenship Middle School Will Be Showcased at the First Friday Art Trail

On the first Friday of every month, the First Friday Art Trail is held in the Lubbock Cultural District. This event brings together collectors, artists, and community friends for an evening of art, music, and fun. Featuring a variety of art centers, museums, galleries, and businesses, First Friday Art Trail offers an ever-changing array of art exhibits in all media.

This upcoming March First Friday Art Trail will feature works of art composed by Frenship Middle School students. These students have not only worked very hard and diligently on their projects, but they truly flexed their creative ideas.

Shelby Elkins, the art teacher at FMS, stated that students are always looking for ways to bend the constructs in their art. While testing new ideas, the students have to problem-solve as they work and regularly overcome obstacles when things don't go perfectly.

“I love to let them explore their curiosity,” said Elkins. “Each art project is not only an opportunity to be expressive, but it is an opportunity to use critical thinking skills, time management skills, and to learn how to organize resources.”

Elkins stated that throughout the year she has watched the students' skills and work ethic grow. With each project, she has discovered what makes each student an individual and witnessed them learn more about themselves.

“I am immensely proud of my students,” said Elkins. “It means the world to me for the community to see our students' work. Our students are the future, and their artwork is a glimpse into their minds and spirits. I want people to have their eyes out for these young blossoming artists who will certainly go on to do great things with their talent and, more importantly, their strong work ethics.”

At the March 1 First Friday Art Trail, the General Education student art will be in the Graffiti Building and the Life Skills student art will be on display via the Grey Edges Art Gallery in the Ice House Building.
