Unified Esports is a gaming competition in partnership with Special Olympics that brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together to compete in their favorite video games.
One of the games the Unified team plays is Rocket League, a 3v3 competition where the students compete by playing soccer in an enclosed arena by driving cars to score. The game is structured as the best of three rounds to determine the game-winner.
Earlier in the season, the Frenship High School Unified Rocket League team dominated the playing field and brought home the Regional Champions title. The team rode that momentum into the State Competitions and swept the competition in the first rounds of playoffs, going 4-0 into the championship round.
The team lost the first game but came back fighting and won the next four games, securing the State Champion Trophy for the second year in a row.
Daniel Martinez, Payton Neufeld, and John Gatica were presented with their trophy this week at the Frenship Unified Track meet during the opening ceremony hosted by representatives from Special Olympics and PlayVS.
“The team practices during class and they work hard to compete at this level,” said Brian Singletary, the Frenship High School Esports coach. “There are several very talented schools that we compete against, and this trophy is proof of our hard work.”
