Bennett Elementary 5th Grade Leadership Team Collects Donations for Caleb’s Closet

Earlier this month, the Bennett Elementary 5th Grade Leadership Team raised donations for Caleb’s Closet and this week presented the donations to the organization. The Leadership Team is made up of twelve 5th graders who aim to help better serve the school and community.

Amanda Lara Bennett’s 5th Grade Leadership Sponsor shares the process of choosing a nonprofit to serve.

“To pick the charity for their community service project they all had to come up with 3 charities to present to the group,” said Lara. “They had to research each charity they chose and be able to answer any questions about the charity. At the end they voted between the final two charities and voted for Caleb's Closet because it would help so many in our community and surrounding areas.”

Hadley Read, a 5th Grade Leadership Team member enjoys serving the community. Her favorite part about serving on the Leadership Team has been able to lead by example and demonstrate The Frenship Way.

“I like being able to help everyone around the school,” said Read. “Some kids aren’t as fortunate as others so it’s important to give back”

The Leadership Team set up a challenge for each grade level. The grade with the most donations raised earns a pizza party.

“The amount of donations was INCREDIBLE! Our Bennett Tigers really came together to support this cause and our community,” said Lara. “We practically filled an entire room with the donations we received!

Before handing all the items over to Caleb’s Closet, the students sorted and organized the clothing items by size. When it came time to load up all the donations, the truck from Caleb’s Closet was filled to the brim with bags of donations.

“It was amazing to see this group work so hard for something they are so passionate about,” said Lara. “They understand that some of these kids going into foster care will go into their new homes with only the clothes they have on their backs and were eager to help this cause. They were very excited and enthusiastic about not only helping the kids that are entering foster care, but also the families that are opening their hearts and homes to these kids.”
