Last weekend, hundreds of students from the Lubbock area gathered for a day filled with leadership development, goal setting, and career exploration activities, all inspired by the vision of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The MLK Youth Empowerment Summit was organized by Texas Tech Campus Access & Engagement, the Texas Tech School of Law, and the Rawls College of Business.
Several Frenship schools attended the event and learned about how to further their leadership skills. Heritage Middle School Media Specialist Nichole Griffith brought several students who were eager to gain new insights and make a positive impact.
“The summit is an amazing event where students spend the day diving into leadership, setting goals, exploring careers, and learning how to make a difference in their communities—all inspired by Dr. King’s legacy,” said Griffith. “It’s a mix of workshops, discussions, and inspiring speakers that leave everyone feeling empowered and ready to tackle the future.”
Griffith believes that it’s important and beneficial for students to attend events like this because it provides them with opportunities to expand their perspectives and develop skills that will help them succeed in all areas of life.
“Events like this are so important because they give students a chance to grow outside of the classroom. It’s not just about learning leadership skills or setting goals—it’s about being surrounded by positive role models and peers who push each other to dream big and make an impact. Plus, it’s a chance for them to hear real-life success stories and see how they can turn their passions into purpose,” said Griffith.
Frenship High School senior and future Red Raider Jazlin Almager attended the summit and enjoyed learning about the opportunities and resources available for her future.
“The MLK Youth Empowerment Summit did an excellent job showcasing what college is like for aspiring students,” said Almager. “I got to speak with many people who shared useful tips and advice that will help me prepare for my college career.”
Students participated in sessions designed to equip them with the tools needed to prepare for college and achieve their goals. Breakout sessions covered a variety of meaningful topics, including choosing the right university, prioritizing mental health, discovering their purpose, and navigating career opportunities.
“My favorite part of the event was connecting with current Texas Tech students and learning of their experiences and the challenges they have faced while in college,” said Almager. “The MLK Youth Leadership Summit was an incredible experience that brought together students with similar ambitions, like myself, to learn about leadership and prepare for a successful college career.”
The keynote speaker for this year’s event was Tiffany Kamuche, an attorney and owner of Kamuche Law.
“Her message was all about perseverance, chasing your dreams, and making a difference in your community,” said Griffith. “She shared her own story, showing how hard work and determination can take you anywhere. It was so motivating for the students to hear her firsthand experiences and advice!”
Griffith hopes that the summit will inspire students to see their potential and understand the power of perseverance in achieving their dreams.
“I think the biggest takeaway was realizing that their dreams are achievable if they’re willing to work for them. They left with fresh ideas, new goals, and the confidence that they can make a real difference in their communities, just like Dr. King envisioned,” said Griffith. “Events like this are a great reminder of how important it is to invest in the next generation of leaders. Dr. King’s legacy is alive and well in these kids!”
The MLK Youth Empowerment Summit empowered Frenship students to dream big, set bold goals, and embrace their potential as future leaders. Inspired by Dr. King’s vision, these students are now ready to make a lasting impact within their schools, community, and beyond.
