More than 600 students at Westwind Elementary were gifted with a book to call their own. Stacy Reavis, an English as a Second Language teacher, recently secured a grant through South Plains Electric Coop (SPEC) to provide every student at the school with a book to take home and keep.
As the Teacher Liaison for the PTA, Reavis was inspired by past collaborations with SPEC, including their generous donation of hats and mittens for students. When she learned about the grant opportunity, she jumped at the chance to apply.
Reavis was beyond excited after receiving news that her application had been successful.
"I was shocked and excited," said Reavis. "It was exciting because I LOVE BOOKS."
For Reavis, the ability to provide students with books they can call their own is a meaningful way to foster a lifelong love for reading.
“Reading is the foundation of learning. The sky is the limit when you can read,” said Reavis. “Reading can take you anywhere! Jump into a great book, and you can laugh, cry, and be shocked!”
The books provided through this grant cover a wide variety of grade-level reading abilities, ensuring that every student from Pre-K to 5th grade received a book suitable for their level. Reavis and the PTA chose books from Scholastic, selecting popular series and authors that students love.
"Famous authors and series were picked because the children know and love them," said Reavis.
Reavis hopes the impact of this generous gift will inspire students to develop a love for reading that will last a lifetime. She also emphasized the crucial role of SPEC and the Westwind PTA in making this possible.
"SPEC blessed over 600 students with the gift of reading,” said Reavis. “The women of Westwind’s PTA are the real heroes here. They are the ones that work to make Westwind a better place for our students."
Thanks to the support of South Plains Electric Coop and the hard work of Westwind’s PTA, every student now has a book to call their own, sparking a lasting passion for reading that will benefit them for years to come. Awesome job, Westwind!
