Frenship High School One Act Play Sweeps District Competition

The incredibly talented Frenship High School Theater students are gearing up for the Bi-District One Act Play Contest delivering a showstopping performance at the district competition. The group has been working on perfecting their show Silent Sky since January.

Their performance of Silent Sky tells the true story of Henrietta Leavitt, an early 1900s astronomer who worked at Harvard as a human computer, mapping stars without receiving scientific credit. Denied access to the telescope, she defies limitations and discovers the changes in Cepheid stars—an insight that transforms astronomy. As she pursues her passion, her relationships with family, colleagues, and love interest Peter Shaw are tested. Silent Sky is a moving tale of determination, discovery, and the human touch that makes life under the vast sky beautiful and timeless.

The cast truly embodied the show's themes and displayed the beauty of science and human connection to the judges. Being the second to last group to perform, One Act Play Director Tre John knew that they needed to make a lasting impression with their performances.

“About 5 minutes in, I stopped thinking about the competition and just sat back and enjoyed the show. They were brilliant,” said John.

The cast delivered a stellar performance, earning the prestigious district trophy and securing their place in the bi-district competition. John emphasized the students’ talent, stating that their performance grows stronger and more captivating with each run of the show.

In addition to the District Champion trophy, the group earned a handful of individual awards.

  • Best Technician—Jacen Phillips
  • Honorable Mention All-Star Cast—Abby Cluff
  • All-Star Cast—Shelby Stidham
  • Best Male Performer—Raymond Drake Cagle
  • Best Female Performer—Rylee Whipkey

One Act Play will compete in the Bi-district competition on March 28 at Socorro High School in El Paso.

Good luck at bi-district!
