The Frenship High School Boys Soccer Team recently concluded a remarkable season, one built on grit, heart, and an unwavering commitment to each other. Led by Head Coach Braxton Thorne, the Tigers fought through adversity and created a solid foundation for the future of the program.
“I believe we had a successful season and were able to create a strong foundation for the years to come,” said Coach Thorne. “Our boys showed a new side of tenacity and grit this season that set a new standard going forward. In terms of how we played, we definitely grew as the season went on and learned how to trust and understand each other more. “
Throughout the season, the Tigers proved time and time again that they were never out of the fight. Coach Thorne highlighted three standout moments that showcased the team's resilience.
In a match against Fort Bend Elkins, the Tigers found themselves down 2-0 with just five minutes left in regulation. With determination driving them, they clawed their way back to tie the game 2-2, thanks to a goal from JT Martinez.
Another memorable moment came during a home game against Midland Legacy. Despite losing key players to injury, the Tigers pushed through for a dramatic 3-2 comeback win. Senior captain Samuel Miller stepped up with two impressive goals, including the game-winner in the final minutes.
The team’s playoff-clinching win against Odessa Permian was the ultimate display of heart. Down 2-0 at halftime, the Tigers refused to back down, rallying to tie the game and securing the victory in penalty kicks.
“These three games, for me, proved that our team was never out of a game and was full of fight from minute one to minute eighty,” said Coach Thorne.
Frenship’s team captains and seniors played an instrumental role in keeping the team focused and motivated. Whether delivering game-changing plays or rallying the team during tough stretches, their leadership made a lasting impact.
“I believe all of our captains led by example. All four of them showed up in big moments throughout the season. If we needed a goal or a tackle, they were there to provide it,” said Coach Thorne. “When we hit a skid in the middle part of the season, our captains and seniors reminded everyone of the standards and expectations we set at the beginning of the year.”
Coach Thorne saw tremendous growth in the team's mentality and chemistry over the course of the season. The Tigers learned to stay composed under pressure and support each other no matter the circumstances.
“Much of our growth this season was in our teamwork and mindset. We came back from losing positions many times this season and I think that showed huge growth from previous times. The grit that these boys showed in tough moments won us a lot of games this year,” said Coach Thorne. “As for our skills and how we play, I saw so many players grow individually on the ball which molded together nicely towards the end of the season.”
More than just wins and stats, Coach Thorne hopes the players walk away from the season with powerful life lessons.
“I hope these players learned to always believe in themselves in great times and tough times. Just because it is easy does not mean you can slack off and just because it is hard does not mean you can give up,” said Coach Thorne. “We truly believed that we were never out of a game. I hope they realize that fighting for something, even when it is hard, makes the reward at the end so much better.”
Looking ahead, Coach Thorne is optimistic about the future. With a young roster and many key players returning, the Tigers are eager to build on the momentum from this season.
“We’re losing some strong seniors, but overall, we're a young team,” said Coach Thorne. “Everything will be more familiar next year, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.”
For Coach Thorne, the most rewarding part of the season was seeing the team come together as a family.
“I've said it over and over again, but the grit and attitude this group showed at the end of games was very special to me. I don't think I have ever been in a team where late comeback wins happened this much. This group was truly a family and fought for each other the entire season. Everyone had something to prove to themselves this year and they did just that,” said Coach Thorne.
Way to go, Frenship Boys Soccer! We’re proud of how you represented the Tiger spirit this season.
