Chief Bassett began his law enforcement career with the Lubbock Police Department (LPD) on February 2nd, 1987. After completing the Academy and becoming a certified Peace Officer, Bassett was assigned to patrol division.
In 1991 Bassett transferred to Juvenile Investigations. For the next 10 ½ years he investigated all manner of cases involving juveniles as suspects or victims. Bassett took particular interest in crimes involving child victims and during his time as a detective investigated child abuse, child abductions, sexual assaults of children, and murders.
Bassett served on several boards and committees during this time, including the Child Fatality Review Team, which reviews all deaths of any person under 18 years of age, regardless of cause. Seeing a need to better serve child victims of abuse and neglect, Bassett served on the board that helped to establish the Lubbock Children’s Advocacy Center, which has become an integral part of helping child victims and investigators involved in their cases.
Bassett promoted to the rank of Corporal during this time. In 2001 Bassett promoted to Sergeant and returned to patrol division. Over the next 17 years Bassett continued to promote, eventually finishing his career with LPD as a Deputy Chief. During that time he served in numerous positions including Administration, Public Information Officer, Internal Affairs Commander, Narcotics Commander and Academy Lieutenant. Bassett’s last assignment with LPD was as Deputy Chief with responsibility for all Patrol operations for the northern half of the City of Lubbock.
In January of 2007, Bassett graduated from the Leadership Command College at the Law Enforcement Management Institute of Texas.
In January of 2019, Bassett retired from the Lubbock Police Department after being named Chief of Police for the FISD Police Department.
Chief Bassett and his wife have four children. In March of 2019 they welcomed their first grandchild, who is a future Frenship Tiger!
